La Roux
I have received the self-titled debut album from La Roux yesterday (it’s available tomorrow) and I have now absorbed it all in.
We are thrown into the deep end straight away, catchy synth pop tunes and original electronic sound blended with the enormous but delicate voice of Elly Jackson, who wouldn’t be happy with that?
I’m not really into the whole pop-fluff scene. It’s an excruciatingly hard, long winded process to find the talented pop musicians and trying to look for it just means bumping into corporate moulded narcissistic idiots, throw-away bands and boy bands that make you want to peel the flesh off your own face to drown out the squeaky clean music with the refreshing human feeling of being able to feel something other than scarily happy all the time.
I’m not saying that the album isn’t a happy album, nor am I saying it is depressing. I wouldn’t even call it a deep or conceptual album, it isn’t that progressive and nothing groundbreaking has taken place. It is purely simple, catch music with greatly chosen and mastered sounds. Her voice (Elly Jackon) seems to carry the songs for the most part, but there is plenty of sexy and imperfect synthesizers to fill in the gaps.
I use imperfect not as an insult, but as praise.
That said, some of the tracks do feel a little weak in places and I’d love to hear some heavier sounds in others, but on the whole it is the best thing that has happened to pop for a while and I have added a new name to the list of bands and artists that I love.
Basically; get the album, now.
