Drawings by Lorna Simpson

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

New York artist, Lorna Simpson, has produced some really intriguing works covering a vast collection of different media. Though as a lover of drawings, it probably comes as now surprise when I say that I find her drawings to be the most interesting of her works.

Her ink drawings especially, are simplistic yet powerful with great attention to form and spatial awareness.

You can see some of drawings (and other works) on her website.

Drawings by James Jean

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

After looking at James Jean’s artwork it is apparent that he’s a talented artist, but what is most intriguing to me are his drawings in Moleskin notebooks.

The level of detail, the scale, imagination and his style of drawing has a certain consistency and a flowing feeling; from a distance the forms take on a more general abstract aesthetic, but looking closely unveils more.

You can see more of his drawings on his website.

Eibatova Karina’s Artwork

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

Eibatova Karina has produced some intriguing pieces of art using drawing, watercolours and other media. I really love the Mineral watercolour in particular (as pictured above, full version can be seen here) because it is beautiful (cliche, I know – but there is no other fitting word to describe it).

You can see some more of her works on her Flickr account.

Drawings by Mia Christopher

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

I stumbled upon some drawings by Mia Christopher and they are wonderfully simple and playfully juvenile; there is a very specific style, especially in regard to colours and the forms that the people seem to take.

What intrigues me more is that the drawings push me to make connections to my own childhood; It got me thinking about how, as children, we could make all these interesting drawings full of colour and form and yet in our adulthood we have to learn all over again how to draw in that same way. It is a skill that thinking too much takes away: The ability to connect to the subconscious is always an interesting ordeal, but Mia has managed to create these primal images, combining the knowledge of the fundamentals of art and a subconscious childlike innocence.

A friend of mine once said to me, whilst looking at a piece of abstract expressionist art, “I could get my baby cousin to do that,” to which the reply is always “then do it.”

They are quite interesting pieces (the drawings and prints being a particular favourite of mine). It’s worth taking a look at the shop too. Click here to visit the website.
